Preface to the Special Issue on “IMS Learning Standard”
Received: November 27, 2018 PDF Abstract
We are pleased to publish the special issue on “IMS Learning Standard.” As recent Web technology accelerate an integration of LMS with many educational tools and services, IMS Learning standard will play more important role in EdTech industry. Thanks to authors related to IMS Japan Society, this special issue covers all about IMS in Japan now.
Establishment and Missions of IMS Japan Society -Next-Generation ICT-enhanced Education and International Standardization Activities-
Tsuneo Yamada
Received: October 10, 2018 PDF Abstract
IMS Japan Society (“IMS-JS”) was established as a Japanese NPO in 2016 by several Contributing Members of IMS Global Learning Consortium which has the headquarters in Japan. The missions are to disseminate IMS technical standards in Japanese educational institutions and corporates and to contribute to develop a global eco-system of e-Learning and ICT-enhanced education. While IMS Japan holds a series of the seminars under the collaborations with international/domestic organizations, she launched new support services such as IMS Japan Awards and IMS-certified “Training & Implementation Manager” qualification.
Latest Trends of LTI and Case Study at Hosei University
Soichiro Fujii
Received: November 27, 2018 PDF Abstract
LTI is a popular global standard for interoperability to connect learning applications. Recently LTI is paid attention as a core component of NGDLE. In this report I introduce features of latest version of LTI and case studies about using LTI at Hosei University.
Overview of Caliper Analytics v1.1
Jaebum Lee, Yuji Tokiwa
Received: September 10, 2018 PDF Abstract
It is inevitable that learning data should be needed for learning analytics and adaptive learning using AI. Caliper Analytics standardized by IMS GLC enables institutions to collect more granular learning data than system logs of LMS. So, learners’ activities will be analyzed in detail by Caliper. This paper describes overview and use case of Caliper Analytics focusing to v1.1.
IMS OneRoster Standard -Summary of version 1.1 specification and its adaptation in U.S. and Japan-
Shigeo Fujiwara, Minako Nishizawa Kubo
Received: October 1, 2018 PDF Abstract
Today, not only higher education but many K-12 schools in Japan have started to utilize digital learning environment, which consists of multiple software products and systems. IMS OneRoster standard defines the data layout and methods to exchange class roster related data between those systems, to save the time of manual registration and streamline the basis of evidence-based education. This article describes about OneRoster v1.1 specification, number of conformant products and the very first adaptation trials in Japan.
Overview of QTI
Masakazu Nagai
Received: September 26, 2018 PDF Abstract
CBT are getting popular all ovet the world for achivement tests.QTI established by IMS GLC is a standard for the interoperabilty of test items and tests among various CBT systems. We will report the outline of QTI and its case studies in this paper.
University ICT System Integration from the Perspective of Standardization -Case Study at Kumamoto University-
Hiroshi Nakano
Received: October 18, 2018 PDF Abstract
In this paper, we introduce university system integration, especially the case study of Kumamoto University from the perspective of standardization. Under the university portal, various systems have constructed an environment in which users can seamlessly use them through single sign-on and data synchronization in various formats. In particular, data synchronization between SIS and LMS using IMS Enterprise enabled smooth change of LMSs. Recently, WebAPI, which is being introduced to web applications due to expandability and mashup possibility, has high real-time nature, but IMS Enterprise is premised on batch processing and it is difficult to synchronize data in real time. IMS OneRoster, a successor standard of IMS Enterprise, supports not only CSV but also WebAPI, it therefore can reflect on the LMS immediately after registration of subjects in SIS. It should be considered to introduce. Although such data synchronization tends to be considered as a site-level talk, it must be considered based on long-term strategy, because it occupies an important position in service improvement, cost reduction and security enhancement.
Utilization of IMS LTI® standard at Cyber University
Yorihito Tanaka
Received: September 10, 2018 PDF Abstract
This article describes a Learning Management System called “Cloud Campus” developed by Cyber University for full online lectures. Cloud Campus has a function of Learning Tools Interoperability® (LTI®) , and can deliver video courses to other LTI® compatible Learning Management Systems. We also conducted feasibility studies with other universities using LTI® and confirmed that Cloud Campus can be used smoothly from outside of Cyber University.
Feasibility Study on Lesson Improvement by IMS Compliant Canvas -Case Study at Hosei University-
Yuji Tokiwa
Received: August 31, 2018 PDF Abstract
Canvas has achieved its market share of LMS by 28% in US universities in parallel with Blackboard. And Canvas got the most number of certifications of IMS standard as well. At the end of 2017 school year, this research center introduced Canvas experimentally and the author used Canvas in class of a 2018 spring semester. This paper describes the answer for two research questions such as (1) An instructor can develop his/her course to teach using LTI and Caliper, (2) An instructor can improve a teaching quality in his/her class by LTI and Caliper.
